Federal authorities have confirmed that the suspect, identified as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, recently lost four family members in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon just one week prior to the incident. Investigators believe this personal tragedy served as the primary catalyst for what is being treated as a targeted act of terrorism against the Jewish community. The rapid response of on-site security ensured that all 140 children and staff inside the building remained safe.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard reported that the suspect drove his pickup truck directly through the front glass doors, continuing “with purpose” down the synagogue’s main hallway. Upon breaching the building, on-site security personnel immediately engaged the suspect, successfully stopping the vehicle just feet from a nearby classroom. Once the truck came to a halt, an unknown source inside the vehicle ignited, causing it to burst into flames. The resulting chemical smoke was so thick that approximately 30 responding officers required hospital treatment for smoke inhalation while clearing the facility.
